When I was seventeen years old in the very early sixties, by curious good fortune, I was offered the chance to work for the designers Roger and Robert Nicholson. I was a naive child amongst talented men and they in turn occupied a big space in the industry.

One of their collaborators was Romek Marber, a man whom I held in great esteem and who produced what was to become and remained an early icon in my life – a poster for the London Planetarium next to Madame Tussauds in Marylebone.

Romek was an incredibly generous man and took time to explain to me, a lowly assistant, how the artwork was produced in the darkroom using paper cuts and craftsmanship as well as great care and typographic skill. I loved his work.

Many years later when I had grown up and been a friend for ages he visited my studio. He very quietly handed me a tube which contained something I was not expecting – the poster! This was marvellous and it now hangs in my studio as an example to all who see it. I have never tired of looking at it – thank you Romek.
